<Situation>
1. How do you think about the contemporary interior design in East Asia?
Interior designers in East Asia have been facing acute changes since early 19 centuries. They¡¯ve been struggling against insisting their own identity or totally denying their own culture. Fully westernization becomes the mainstream ever since in Asia. However, this kind of inner battle never ends. Recently, I can see more and more interior designers in East Asia doing their best to combine their own cultural elements with contemporary westernized influences. This kind of solution might be a sign of new ¡°fusion¡± design, which is a good thing, I think. Definitely, we may also see oriental influences upon furniture and interior design in Europe and America these days. This kind of interaction of eastern and western culture might reflect the possibilities of internationalization in interior design in this band new century.
<Interest>
2. In which part are you interested and fascinated in the "interior design"?
I prefer to have closer or stronger connection with each individual client. To achieve the client¡¯s wish and to pursue innovative design strategy for each project are some kind of sense of achievement. It¡¯s a balance of arts I think¡.
<Vision>
3. What is the most important thing when you are doing interior design?
To understand the client needs is the most critical part of the whole design process. In the meanwhile, helping the client to make profit either financially or spiritually should be part of the final goal for the interior designer. I also believe that is the main distinction between design and arts.
<Enthusiasm>
4. What are you enthusiastic about in your work now?
To see lovely and beautiful works and design is a very splendid thing. To get a fresh new idea or digging out a new concept is also a very challenging and exciting experience. Of course, to see the ideas fulfilled in the real world is quite exciting. Nevertheless, it usually wouldn¡¯t last too long. I hate and scare to see my own works after several weeks of the completion.
<Origin, Tradition>
5. What kind of influence do you have from your country's own culture or tradition?
As a Chinese designer, for sure, I am dealing with the same conflict between Eastern and Western culture influence. I am trying to look for a new Chinese style in some ways. Sometimes I wonder you may call a new interpretation of the Western Classical style as ¡°Postmodern¡±. How about a new interpretation of Chinese, Japanese or Indian style? It¡¯s kind of unfair but we have to admit that there is no such a name in the architectural term. And I believe people wouldn¡¯t like it either. However, I would like to try and I believe there are people like me doing the same thing.
<Future>
6. What kind of interior design do you think will be important and
influential in the near future?
Hi-tech revolution sets up the new standard for almost everything. I think it will also change the method of design and alter the way things to be built. By means of the precise computer calculation, accuracy of forms could be generated, which means forms of the architecture or interior design could be achieved without limits.
